Can I have a yea or nay

A little earlier tonight I ran across a post in Tackle & Tactics for a man named JACK. Jack only registered yesterday and his first and only post was to sell a hookkeeper that he makes. It was a long drawn out post about the benefits and uses of his hookkeeper as if we never heard of a hookkeeper before.
There were two responses to his post , both were less then complimentary. I wrote a response but by the time I was finished and went to post it Our fearless webmaster had already deleted it
Since I am still fuming over this post I would like to publish my response and I ask the membership to give me their opinion as to whether or not I am on target or off base as to my feelings on matters of this type. The following was my response to JACKS post.

To Jack
I understand that you are in the business of marketing your products but, With all due respect I think your method of advertising is done in poor taste. I can only speak for myself and so what I say only reflects my own personal opinion. This is a Bass Fishermans community. We are, I believe a fairly close knit group of sportsmen & women who enjoy our sport and welcome newcomers to the sport and to our community. Most of us will go out of our way to be helpful and support those among us who have items and products for sale. The one thing that we all seem to share is that we try to first get to know one another even if it is only by the posts that we read and respond to.
I see that you only registered yesterday and your first post on the board is to try to sell us your wares. I for one do not like or approve of someone who professes to be a fisherman comming on this board and acting more like a fish monger. If you would have gotten to know the people on this board and then offered to sell your products to us I might have been of a mind to purchase from you. As it is you come across to me as someone who's only interest in this website is only that of a potential customer base. Again I am Speaking only for myself but after reading your post I feel as if I just got off the phone with a telemarketer and, I HATE telemarketers. Because you find it more important to plug your business then to get to know your clientel, I for one believe that I can live without your product.

you are correct in your feelings about NYBASS, but matters of this nature are best handled by the staff...

i did not see the post, but we try to avoid conflicts and character attacks on the NYBASS boards... the only way to do this is to tactfully delete certain threads or posts(at johnG's and FrankJ's discretion) and email the parties involved to try to explain the situation... often there are misunderstandings that become exacerbated by leaving a thread open... this stuff comes up once and a while and usually can be resolved... sometimes new members are well intentioned and sometimes their motives are selfish... only time on the board tells the real story!... so i hope you're not upset that your post was deleted...it was all done in the good nature of NYBASS!

holding back takes a little getting used to... i know i've fumed over threads before, but i've learned that conflicts like this don't lead to a good place when they're voiced in public... i would email jack your post

I understand your point but, I must respectfully disagree with you. I know that this may seem like a minor nusance to you but voicing ones opinion is an important part of what this forum is about. If we keep our mouths closed everytime someone attempts to use this board in a way that it was not meant to be used then instead of a bass website we will be nothing but one large infomercial. I was not attempting to be crass or vindictive but I personally find it impersonal at the very least to have your first post an advertisment for something you wish to hawk. Not a hi my name is jack and I am from etc.....
I realize that you and Frank can and do delete these threads and so you should, but hanging back is not and, has never been one of my strong points. I have always been one to make my feelings known and call a spade a spade. I call em as I see em, and that one made me see red. I might also remind you that I was not the only one who had a similar view. I am not a shrinking violet but, I do not want to be the one to incite any riots either. I respect what you and Frank & John G. Are trying to do monitoring the posts I just let this one get the better of me. It happens once in a while.
If the gentleman in question comes back I would hope he can become a valued member of this board. I believe we can use as many folks who are genuinely interested in our sport as we can get.

Thing is if he would have put on the Tackle for sale board it would still be there! If he puts it on one of the main boards it's spam. We have plenty of regulars in the "biz" and they don't pull that stuff. Sure if someone "askes" about your product, answer them to your hearts content. BUT if you want to put up an advertisement do it in the right place Tackle for sale

i was also one of the respondents to that post-if you want to advertize become a sponsor-if you want to sell something use the proper format--and yes i agree with using the delete key--however this individual has also learned he will not make many friends by spamming the board-let us not forget there is also a sponsor news forum designed just for that-bobn---just my .02

Guys, like Noel, I was very put off by the fact that I had to read the entire post BEFORE realizing that is was just spam....

As Gregg said, it should have been on Tackle for sale, but even then it might have hit me the wrong way

Noel, it's not like I wasn't interested in your response which was well written , it's just that the longer I leave something like that on there to hang, the more free time I am giving him, hence my decision to wipe him out quickly....

His whole approach, was like one of those obnoxious infomercials on TV...very condescending...... he had his 15 minutes of fame...

Exactly. No harm intended. We do have our respected sponsors and they pay for such ad space. If someone wants to sell something they may do so in the 4
Sale boards. However, no spamming of such products should be done. Such as getting the post to the top by bumping it.

NYBass.com needs to protect any acts of spamming or advertising by non-paid sponsors. You may post it in the 4
Sale boards only.

Thanks and I did not see that post, sorry.

Noel, no knock against you at all. Still love you from
Southern NY!

Agree

Their's a spot to advertise and a spot to chat.

Not much on moderation, but they do have a place, especially since it's their forum!

Time for some tight lines and a beer
